Why “Grey Hair & Green Lights”?
Never too old to chase the apex
In late 2024, my dad passed away from brain cancer.
It was a devastating time, but it also became something of a wake-up call for me. My dad was the person I used to go and watch motorsport with. We shared that passion, and some of my best memories were spent standing trackside together.
After he was gone, I realised that life really is too short to keep putting things off.
I’d raced karts back in the 1990s, and I’d also worked in the karting world. I was a marshal at Bracknell’s KartSpeed, which has since sadly closed, and for a short time when I lived in Manchester, I worked at a karting venue near Old Trafford.
Then came the big decision.
In February 2025, at 55 years old, I decided to take the plunge and get back behind the wheel. I had absolutely no karting gear, and after roughly 30 years away, my skills were more than a little rusty! I remember taking that first breath before getting back out on track. Part of me wondered whether I’d still have it. Another part of me was probably wondering whether my body was going to forgive me afterwards!
But I went for it.
And that’s where the journey began. Now I’m back in karting in my 50s, visiting tracks, racing, learning all over again and seeing just how far I can take it.
This isn’t about trying to prove I’m the fastest guy on the circuit. It’s about having fun, challenging myself, meeting people, experiencing different tracks and, hopefully, showing that you’re never too old to have another go at something you love.
So the question is…
Am I too old for karting, or is this just one hell of a midlife crisis?
Either way, the journey continues.
Grey Hair & Green Lights.
